Illinoisans are being targeted by a vicious misinformation campaign against the Pretrial Fairness Act, the section of the SAFE-T Act which will end money bond in January. Fear-mongering through false newspaper articles and viral posts describes a supposed "purge law," scaring communities into believing that the money bond system keep us safe. The current system, in reality, lessens levels of communal safety by disproportionately exposing Black and Brown low-income people to the dangers of detention, simply because they cannot pay a ransom for their freedom. CGLA has invited the Chicago Community Bond Fund to join our series with the Chicago Public Library to teach us about the Pretrial Fairness Act and why pretrial release decisions should be based on facts, not finances.
