Aisha's January Remarks

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

January 27, 2022

I want to wish you a wonderful and healthy 2022.

I am incredibly honored and humbled to join Cabrini Green Legal Aid (CGLA) as its new Executive Director. I first joined CGLA in 2013 as the Supervising Attorney of the Criminal Defense team, where I had the most significant personal growth in my understanding of the criminal legal system and its impact on the souls that come into contact with it.

I have been in more than 15 roles in and around the criminal legal system, ranging from prosecutor to indigent defender, and more recently adjunct criminal law professor at Loyola School of Law and criminal justice program officer/policy analyst at the MacArthur Foundation. The pursuit of a world where all can achieve self-actualization without racial, ethnic, class, gender, ability, or orientation barriers is deeply personal for me

As we start the new year my priority will be to lift the people, mission, and visibility of CGLA. To achieve this, I will focus on increasing support, grounding our work in community, embracing innovation in our programs, and making CGLA a recognized leader in our strive for racial justice. I also want to thank my predecessor, Steve Fus, Former Interim Executive Director, for leading CGLA in the last six months. I am grateful for his continued dedication to CGLA and those we serve.

Finally, I want to thank CGLA’s dedicated staff, partners, and supporters like you, for helping our clients transform their lives. I look forward to meeting and getting to know you – our donors, supporters, partners, volunteers, and clients – and invite you all to continue standing with CGLA to Give Justice A Voice.

Thank you for your continued support.

Gratefully,

Aisha Cornelius Edwards

Executive Director
