Cabrini Green Legal Aid

Community Volunteers
Overview

Many volunteer opportunities exist for those not specifically affiliated with the legal field. Opportunities include helping with building repairs, grant writing, graphic design, office administration, fundraising, and organizing special events. This is a great way to experience the day-to-day functioning of a legal aid organization, as well as to get to know CGLA, our clients, and our staff while concretely working to promote the values of justice and mercy. Volunteer Orientation is provided for all volunteers in order to provide information about CGLA and our practice areas.

If you are interested in volunteering with CGLA, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Katie Schermerhorn, at 312-266-1345 ext 424.

You may answer the telephone, greet and direct clients to meeting rooms, photocopy materials, provide word-processing support, assist with mailings, or perform related tasks. This is an excellent opportunity to interact with our clients and experience the daily operations of a legal aid organization.

    Fundraising / Marketing
CGLA needs help throughout the year with fundraising events and mailings. At special events, you may greet attendees, distribute nametags, and assist with setup, teardown, and execution. Mailings include newsletters, invitations to special events, and letters to friends of CGLA. Mailings are a great opportunity to meet other volunteers and spend time in a fast-paced office environment. Additionally, volunteers interested in fundraising and/or marketing may work closely with CGLA’s Director of Development in writing grants, researching foundations, interviewing clients/attorneys and drafting their stories, and writing for various publications including event materials and our newsletters. We also have occasional research projects that require volunteer assistance.
