Volunteer Attorney of the Year: Dan Hetzel

Dan Hetzel began volunteering at CGLA as an intake volunteer during the summer of 2006. From the outset, he showed great enthusiasm in his work on behalf of CGLA clients. Dan was quickly identified as an extremely adept intake volunteer and one on whom CGLA attorneys can rely. He eagerly expanded his volunteer commitment by progressing through the volunteer program, moving from civil and criminal intakes onto jail intakes, clemency intakes, and case assistance. Before long, Dan proved his ability to assist CGLA clients in the court room, and was approached with the opportunity to begin handling CGLA criminal defense cases on his own. He has dedicated over 160 hours of volunteer service to CGLA in FY 2007. CGLA's criminal defense attorney John Benson commented, "Dan Hetzel possesses the fortitude to practice criminal law well. We rely on him because he is talented, skilled, and dedicated." Through his dedication to pro bono service, Dan works on behalf of those in need of an advocate.

Volunteer Law Student of the Year: Robert Augenlicht

Robert Augenlicht began his involvement at CGLA as an Expungement Help Desk volunteer in February of 2006. He has since dedicated over 115 hours of volunteer service to CGLA and our clients. Always eager to assist, Robert is a volunteer who can be depended on to step in at the last minute and assist CGLA's criminal records attorneys. He is an extremely knowledgeable Help Desk worker, assisting the people of Chicago who have backgrounds to learn more about their options for expungement, sealing, and executive clemency. While the help desk provides a very fast-paced and intense atmosphere, Robert's professionalism and dedication enable him to provide thorough assistance to each help desk visitor he meets. CGLA's criminal records attorney Regina Bryan notes that "Robert is passionate about learning and is always seeking creative ways to help the client. He loves interacting with clients and his service has been a real asset to the Help Desk."

Volunteer of the Year: Cate Northup

Cate Northup first became aware of CGLA's work at the 2005 Annual Benefit and felt compelled to begin giving her time and efforts assisting the development team. Through her extensive breadth of volunteer tasks and contribution of over 100 volunteer hours, Cate has become an integral part of CGLA's development team. Her assistance includes photographing clients and staff, designing appeal letters and holiday cards, serving as a community member on the CGLA development committee, editing newsletters and grant proposals, serving as an Annual Benefit table host, and designing and creating visual pieces for the Benefit. Cate also served as the co-chair of the 2007 Annual Benefit. Director of Development Tim Wallace says, "Cate is the perfect volunteer. She cares deeply about justice, and she delivers on her promises every time. She has contributed to almost every major development task in the last two years. She is integrally involved in our work."
