Expungement Help Desk

CGLA operates an Expungement Help Desk at the Daley Center where volunteers meet daily with individuals seeking to clear their criminal records. This three-hour commitment is a perfect fit for busy attorneys looking for a defined volunteer opportunity with client contact.

Process: Volunteer attorneys and law students help staff the desk, where they meet with clients, determine their eligibility for expungement, sealing, or clemency, and help them file the necessary paperwork. The desk is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

Training: Attend a CGLA Attorney/Law Student Expungement Help Desk training session, which is offered on a monthly basis and covers Help Desk processes and procedures, including how to read a RAP sheet and determine eligibility for expungement or sealing. Training fills in advance. Please contact volunteer coordinator Katie Schermerhorn to sign up.

Requirements: Attorney or law student with excellent interpersonal skills who displays patience and compassion when working with others.

Suggested Commitment: After completing the training program, we ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of three mornings (9 hours) working at the desk.
